The WARM UP
Introduction
Why you’re here
If you have landed here it is likely you’re curious about making a career change.
Maybe you’ve taken a leap of faith such as quitting your job and clearing out the space to do something big, or perhaps you have an inkling you need to make a change but you don’t yet have clarity on the next steps.
What is The Warm Up?
The Warm Up is aimed at helping professionals like you get more out of your career. We provide a set of thoughtfully designed exercises to kickstart this discovery process.
How is The Warm Up different?
Most career change exercises require you to have a specific goal and work backwards to figure out the steps to get there. We’re not going to ask you to do this. Instead, we recognise that most people don’t have a clear sense of what they want. Or if they do, they can’t always see the pathway. The purpose of The Warm Up is to help create a map that takes you from where you are now to a possible future.
Our first step in creating the map is to complete The Risk Assessment exercises.
The Risk Assessment
What is The Risk Assessment?
Any change can feel unnerving so we want to give you the best chance of following through with your intentions. That’s why we’ve designed The Risk Assessment. Think of this as a stocktake, which invites you to assess:
the resources you have on hand (like time and money)
ways you can utilise these resources
where you might get derailed
The truth is, for any change to be successful - or even get off the ground - you have to be prepared to make adjustments to the way you live, big or small.
Why The Risk Assessment?
This warrants an introduction to Solai. Solai is the ‘S’ in AMS and one of our cofounders.
Solai has taken some big career risks. Solai is an Actuary who found her way into the world of startups, where she got the inspiration to start angel investing. She made a series of bold moves including:
Left her paying job to take time out and reflect on next steps
Took the funds she had saved for an MBA and invested that in startups
Invested in a company director’s course because she was interested in joining boards
All these risks paid off as Solai is now an emerging fund manager and the chair of a not for profit.
From the outside, Solai’s journey is impressive - she has made it look easy. But the fact is, before Solai took a step forward into the unknown, she paused to assess her current circumstances and the risks involved. After all, she is an Actuary!
We’ve distilled Solai’s expertise into our first collection of exercises below, The Risk Assessment:
Money Audit
Time Audit
Scenario Planning
Saboteurs Assessment
We recommend doing these exercises in sequence.
